General details

The chalet is in a fabulous position for those who wish to be on the slopes quickly but prefer not to be isolated. The main lift is just across the road. When the snow is good you can ski back to the chalet, right to the back door if you are prepared to cheat and cross the neighbour’s garden!

Ground floor

Sitting/dining room, kitchen, large bathroom, bedroom and hallway. Sitting room has a log fire and a dining area for 10/11. French doors to south facing balcony with a view of Mont Blanc. A twin bedroom (bedroom four) sleeps two, this is accessed from the sitting room and could double as a separate play room for children. Well fitted kitchen and large bathroom on this floor and a separate WC.

First floor

There are three bedrooms on this floor. The main bedroom sleeps three it has a double bed and one single with an en-suite shower room. Bedroom two sleeps two in two single beds. Bedroom three sleeps four, it has a bunk bed and two singles. There is an additional shower room with WC on this floor. We are happy to change bed arrangements if necessary.

Other details

Sous sol / basement for ski and bike storage – you can put boots around the majestic boiler. The chalet was refurbished by present owners and equipped with new furniture and bedding. The steps up to the chalet and a fairly steep rustic staircase would make the chalet difficult for the elderly or disabled (although there is one ground floor bedroom).

There is a log fire and a supply of logs which together with the central heating makes the whole place very cosy and warm with bags of atmosphere. You can park temporarily to unload outside the chalet. There is plenty of free parking in the telepherique car park across the road and also a parking bay off the road opposite.

We provide a list of our favourite restaurants in the town. There are some maps for walkers. There is a small library of books in French and English and a selection of DVDs. There is also a pretty terraced garden with garden furniture. The balcony has a view of the Dome de Miage, part of the Mont Blanc range. Take a coffee on the terrasse when there is a beautiful sunset and watch the mountain turn pink as the sun goes down.

Car hire from Geneva airport

When booking car hire at Geneva airport make sure you check what side of the airport you are booking from. Prices from the French side are often cheaper than the Swiss side, however the compulsory vignette (road tax) required for using the motorway network in Switzerland is not included. Using the motorways without the vignette (40CHF) will land you a 250CHF fine if caught so the potential savings could very quickly be eroded! All the big operators have desks on both the French and Swiss sides of the airport – experience tells us that navigating the airport through to the French side can be a little tricky, but sometimes you can get a better deal (don’t forget the vignette).

The price is inclusive of all services, linen, cleaning, logs etc. for the major weeks. Other weeks there may be an extra charge for these services. From the chalet

The chalet is in a great position to take advantage of the bars, cafés and restaurants in village centre (about five mins walk). The village has everything you will need and all is accessible within a 10 to 20 min walk (no uphill). There is a row of shops including a delicious patisserie about 100 yards away. We provide a list of cafes, recommended restaurants and bars, suggested walks, ski circuits and days out. There is a local produce market on Thursday mornings. During the season there are plenty of concerts, exhibitions and ‘spectacles’ in the church and town for your enjoyment. You can find out more about what’s on during your stay from the Saint Gervais tourist office.

The Tramway

Saint Gervais has the “highest rack railway in all France”. The Tramway du Mont Blanc is about a 15 minute walk from the chalet and it takes you on a beautiful journey up to the slopes of Les Houches. In summer it takes you on to the Bionnasay glacier on Mont Blanc ‘the pure mountain’ where you can start your climb to the summit (guide recommended), walk down or go the lazy way back on the train.

Les Thermes

The original thermal baths are in the beautiful park down in Le Fayet. It now offers beauty treatments and was established to take advantage of the mountain waters, cures for ailments available – probably handy after a good days skiing.

Non Skiers / Summer

For non skiers and mixed groups there are a large selection of marked paths on the mountain for walking or snowshoeing, a skating rink, ice-hockey, sleigh rides (in Megeve) and the picturesque towns of St Gervais, Megève & Chamonix to explore. Chamonix is a 20 min trip, there are bookable buses from here to take you to Italy for skiing in Courmayeur or Verbier. The Aiguille du Midi 3,742m cable car and the Mont Blanc Tramway provide a high altitude thrill without the exertion. Taking the opportunity to see more countries as part of your trip, a scenic train ride through the Chamonix valley leads to Switzerland, or the famous Mont Blanc tunnel takes you to Italy.
